I saw that it recommends installing OS X Sierra only on Mac Pro mid-2010 and later.
However, I've updated my boot drive to a 500 GB SSD.
Do you think I could still update the software to Sierra?

I'm on the same boat except I updated firmware, so System Report says it's Mac Pro5,1.
I have read that updating EFI on the 2009 (4.1) to that of a 2010 (5.1) allows installing the beta.
Since you have installed an SSD I think it should be able to handle Sierra fine
Hmm, interested I never knew that you could do that.
So I found this page - am I supposed to click on the Computer that I have now? Early 2009? or on the firmware that I want to have? MP51.007F?

It looks like as well, it mentions that if you have OS X El Capitan installed already, you have to turn off SIP?
When I updated the firmware on my 2009 a couple of weeks ago I just booted from a Mavericks disk I had alrady installed
I just successfully installed Sierra on my 2009 with 5.1 firmware update
